Shopping Ban Update # 1

I thought it would be a good idea to do an update every few weeks.

Overall Thoughts: It’s going good. I haven’t been tempted to buy anything. But I was not able to stop myself from browsing online once in a while. Ebay and Poshmark are my poison of choice. I am happy to report that I am able to moderate the dosage of internet time when compared to before.

I had to go to the mall to help my friend pick a wedding suit. He liked a few things but we are still not ready to pull the trigger. I spent $18.95 on a MAC lipstick while I was there. I came home and did not like it enough to keep. Why God? Why do you send me to the mall when I am on a shopping ban? Why does makeup look good in the store and look so bad at home? Ughhh! I will be returning the lipstick the next time we go Suit Shopping.

Things that tempted me:

  1. Victorian Inspired Blouses : I have always loved lace collared tops – slightly Victorian inspired, yet modern enough for casual wear. I was so happy to see them come back in trend last year. 3ecfe79b1cc72d370ff18e7a61780b46CombinedHonestly, the few lace ruffled blouses that I tried last year did not work on me. This one was a tiny bit tempting. But then, a simple jersey-cotton blouse that needs dry cleaning? Also, I had such terrible luck with Rebecca Taylor clothes in the past. The quality of some of their clothes is worse than the usual fast fashion culprits. For now, I will  take solace in the bad reviews 🙂

  2. Comme Des Garcon Play Striped Tee in Green : I saw a second hand one on Poshmark for a third of the retail price. It is so hard to find CDG Play at consignment stores. Most of the CDG Play T shirts on Ebay are very fishy and look fake. What a treat to find an authentic one in my size! Then I reminded myself that green may not really go with the rest of my wardrobe. I would rather buy a CDG Play in plain black or black stripe instead, when the time is right.

I have a feeling CDG Play is going to part me from some of my money this year!

  3. I did NOT chase any pairs of shoes. Wohooo!!

Other things I focused on:

  1. Cleaned up a bit of my closet. I have so many things that I don’t fit into anymore. I was finally able to put some of them up for sale.I even sold an Everlane blouse that was sitting in my closet for almost an year without much wear.
  2. Hosted 3 dinners and all of them were a success, if I may say so myself.
  3. I am yet to clear my shoe closet and sell or donate a few.
  4. I discovered a few new bloggers that I am really digging right now. I added a few more items to my Favorite Reads. Please feel free to check it out.
  5. Overall, I got tempted less times this week. I found other activities to do, like finally opening those adult coloring books!!                   IMG_6721

Were you tempted by anything recently? Did you love it enough to buy it?  Are you getting ready to make spring and summer purchases?

Thanks for including me in your blog list! I really appreciate it.

I’m in the process of planning out my spring and summer clothing purchases, but it’s hard to get in that frame of mind when there’s still snow on the ground. I like the look of Victoriana, but I don’t think I’m sartorially daring enough to go for that level of embellishment. But Valentino couture has long been an inspiration.

You are most welcome. I absolutely love all your skiing trip pictures!! What camera did you use? The pictures have an old school charm to them 🙂 It is hard to comment via wordpress on Blogger and some times my comments just error out on various blogspot blogs.

Yes, I think Victorian inspired clothes are very hard to pull off without looking odd or dated, if you know what I mean. I think sometimes I live in a alternate reality where I can wear certain types of clothes! haha! For a normal person like me, the purpose of Couture is just to transport you to a different time.It is lovely to look at the pictures, isn’t it? 🙂

I use my iPhone 6S and edit on VSCO. I try not to go overboard with editing, but with my skiing pictures, there was a lot of light reflecting off the snow and it looked odd either way.

I have either an escapist or a utilitarian view of fashion. They don’t fit together.

You are most welcome! I really love your blog. Me too! I think i ‘like the look’ of Victoriana more than actually being able to carry it off. 🙂

  2. I agree that Victorian blouses can be tricky to pull off in “real life,” esp. when they start doing that frilly stuff on the shoulders and pull the hair up in a certain way its like a hipster sister wife…so Chloe Sevigny then? The adult coloring books so cute! I’ve even seen David Bowie or vintage vogue cover ones. It seems soothing.

I’ve been doing good on my no-buy, I actually have a negative credit card balance for a change! I’ve also been forcing myself to use up my beauty products and I can see which products I need or that I can see the difference now that I’m without. Closet-wise, I’m still purging. And I’m not tempted to actually purchase because I truly don’t have much occasion to change out of my house clothes these days. And I’ve been on a role with cooking up some good dishes, so yah to developing more productive hobbies! Now if I can get myself to crack open my Arabic books.

That reference of Chloe from Big Love is soo spot on! Now, I know why I cannot pull off those blouses in real life. Lol!
      Negative CC balance sounds awesome!!

I am using up a few of the sunscreens and other potions before I buy anything new. That darn lipstick is such a waste. The color doesn’t look right on me. My closet purge is still in progress. It will be few weeks before i finally figure out what are staying and what are leaving (selling or donating).

Arabic sounds so lovely, especially when the speaker is a lady. Good luck!

  3. It is extra tempting when you come across something second-hand that is what you want but not in the colour or fit! I think it’s a good idea to hold out for the exact item. I found a reasonably priced Saint James breton top at the second hand store in red and white, I almost bought it before I remembered that I’m actually looking for a navy/white one and I never wear the red and white top I already have.

I did say I wasn’t going to buy anything else clothing-wise this year, but a belt I had my eye on has gone on sale so I will probably be breaking that promise – although I have been looking for one for a while!

Yes! When things that we want turn up in different colors, it is difficult to remind ourselves what we are really looking for and move on.
I think it is good to have rules so that we don’t go crazy. But, it is fine to step beyond them when something that is really missing in our closet/ something we have wanted for a while comes up at a good price. It is the impulse buys that hurt my pocket all the time!

  4. Congratulations on your strong willpower! Hosting 3 dinners sounds very good – what did you cook?
I’m also consistently reminding myself that I need to clean up my closet a bit, too, but I’m either too busy or tired to do that or, when I open my wardrobe, I see things I no longer wear much but am not prepared to let them go. Also, because of huge pile of work in last few weeks + vacation in Portugal, I almost haven’t thought of what I wear and just pulled something from my wardrobe, while actually using some of the pieces shortlisted for leaving it.
Now I’m eyeing some trenchcoat – I don’t own any spring/autumn jacket execept for my leather one which is slightly inappropriate for my workplace. And been looking for a short-sleeve striped T-shirt, too. It’s quite interesting to watch how work changed my attitude to dressing and preferences.

Thank you Zia! Fingers crossed about keeping it going until May.
My go to for Indian dinners is Biryani (Chicken & Rice) and a good goat curry. For smaller gatherings, I love Chicken Alfredo Pasta. Most of my appetizers are either finger food – for instance, anything that goes with Guacamole. This time I even tried an avocado hummus which turned out good! I have been pushing myself in the dessert department. I am not much of baker. So, being able to make good fudgy brownies from scratch and homemade ice cream for dessert was a highlight.

I still struggle with cleaning up my closet. I gained weight in the last few months and quite a few things don’t fit anymore. I am putting them in storage to revisit at after 3 to 4 months.
I am also starting to realize the futility of having too many ‘weekend clothes’ which are really not office appropriate. So, one of my new rules for future purchases is that I should be able to wear anything I buy to work, at least on a ‘casual day’.

      • Thanks for food recommendations! I’ve been long thinking about how bored I’m about my “cooking repertoire” so I’d like to try something new.
Work clothes: Yes, the same happened to me, too! Now, whenever I think about buying something, the first questions is: is it office-appropriate and at the same time, wearable after-hours? I never valued my ordinary, deeply casual blue jeans so much until I began to work – now they are a synonym for “free time” for me. 🙂
