Begin Again: Style Recap

Have you seen the movie Begin Again? It was available on Netflix in October. If you haven’t already watched it, please do.  It reminded me of another awesome music movie that I watched many years ago – Once.

Kiera Knightley is clearly the star of the movie. Over the years, I watched all of her movies. Some, I like more than others. But as somebody who loves the magic of clothes, I’d say the real star of the movie is her Style. She pretty much wears a uniform without trying too hard to match anything. The formula is so simple and beautiful.

Things I love about her outfits:

  1. They say ‘Summer in the City’ without trying too hard.
  2. This is one of those few times when it is actually refreshing to watch an outsider in NewYork city.
  3. She has a purpose, even if that purpose is to just look around and explore.
  4. Her clothes are a natural extension of her personality in the movie.
  5. High waist linen trousers, slightly tapered at the ankle – WHERE CAN WE FIND THOSE??
  6. Boxy blouses – sleeveless, cap sleeves, cropped, checks, linens, silk – dreams come true!
  7. Those loafers are made to be paired with those trousers.
  8. Simple belts with non shiny buckles.
  9. Cotton knee length / midi dresses in checks and stripes with SANDALS – perfect for walking around.
  10. There are about 7 to 8 outfits in the entire movie. Many of the basics are repeated.
kiera2I love how this pair of trousers are repeated through out the movie. Those black sandals go so well with that belt in the second outfit.

I’ll be honest here, this is most definitely not how I dress. I don’t have the effortless, body type and height for it. But, that doesn’t stop me for loving and admiring her style in the movie. I am sure quite a few of us can take cues from these outfits.

Quick Trivia: The costume designer, Arjun Bhasin worked on  quite a few awesome movies – Dil Chahta Hai, Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake, Delhi 6, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Life of Pi to name a few . My Indian friends will know this list better than my American ones. The true test of a costume designer is whether his / her clothes can lend to the story without ever taking away attention from the actual narrative. With Begin Again, he definitely hit the sweet spot.

PS: The sound track is great too. Great to listen when you are doing chores! 🙂

What was the last movie that you liked the clothes in? Let me know in the comments section. I’d love to hear what caught your attention.

When keira knightly was ultra popular I thought she was the bees knees. I know what you mean about certain people tha make everything effortless. I realize the formula is straight hair, good skin, and even better bone structure. South american women, especially especially especially have it. A very underrated demographic.

The cropped tapered pants, mango had them for a while.

i cant say i pay toooo much attention to clothing in movies nowadays. Tilda and Cate have a way of inhabiting clothing. The last james bond, the clothing was distracting and not in a good way either, too trying to hard. Two movies that come to mind are the addams family (i will spend my whole life trying to be morticia) and hatsumomo in memoirs of a geisha. For “real life” clothing men stand out more: alain delon is the gold standard.

You are so right about that formula! Anything looks good especially if you have straight hair. Sadly, I don’t have straight hair. Tilda and Cate are such Chameleons when it comes to their roles and outfits in movies. They truly inhabit the clothes they wear. Also, they look soo good in masculine suits. There are that rare breed of actors who are still willing to take some risks on the red carpet.Right?

About Addams family – I read your awesome post and commented too! That McQueen reference is so right! Morticia wears so many different styles, all in black!! That takes a lot of creativity.

Gong Li is so complex and beautiful in that movie – her beautiful neck and shoulders!! Again straight hair, great skin, awesome bone structure – ding ding ding!

Alain Delon – I will have to check out his movies. He looks delicious! 🙂 Do you have any suggestions to start of with?

There’s a wonderful Imgur album of Keira Knightley’s style, many of which feature these outfits from Begin Again. The main point is that she dresses to make the most of her features, namely a small bust and narrow waist, long torso and short legs, and general gangly frame. It’s on Reddit (r/femalefashionadvice) but I don’t think I saved the link.

Yes! I agree. She really dresses for her body type. You pretty much summed it up here! One would really need a certain kind of body type to make this type of style work. That is thing about every uniform style. Not everything works on everyone as much as we want it to. I am a living testimony for that! 😦

  4. This movie never popped up on my radar but I’ll have to try watch it now! Even though that’s not specifically the way I dress, I like it when characters have cohesive and realistic wardrobes.

One film I really enjoyed for the clothes was Stoker. Definitely inspired my purchase of saddle shoes and there’s a lot of symbolism behind each of the character’s outfits.

Oh Stoker! That’s one dark movie! 🙂 I remember Mia Wasikowska’s saddle shoes. The choice of her dress and skirts silhouettes contrasted to her mother’s clothes is very distinct.

  6. I watched this move after I saw her clothes in the trailer. I adore the work of Arjun Bhasin. I once spoke to him after this movie and am saving some quotes to use in a future blog post.

Oh wow, I have to watch this now. The trousers are amazing… I always love trousers in theory but usually only feel comfortable in jeans as pants. Probably the body type thing here too :/

I haven’t found a pair of trousers that make me feel confident and comfortable. Something to do with my wide hips, I think! Yes, like you, I feel more comfortable in jeans than actual pants 🙂
